Booze and Bear Spray at the Campbell River Fair

Folks went to a big event for the first time since COVID started and they completely lost their minds

They just didn’t want the fun to end

The last night at the Campbell River Fair was a real doozy. After two years with no events, people were really excited to get to the fair. Maybe a little too excited.

Constable Maury Tyre of the Campbell River RCMP was left to report on the madness on Monday afternoon. But, according to CTV News, he wasn’t too happy about it.

“I spoke to several younger people the following day,” he said, “and instead of talking about the rides and treats and the fun they had, what they talked about was the fights and the smell of drugs and liquor.”

It sounds like a real party! Just not the kind you bring the kids out to.

In the end, the RCMP were called to ten different incidents, but three really stand out.

The first was a huge fight. According to Campbell River RCMP, a 24-year-old man known to police was “bothering nearly everyone in sight” near the fairgrounds.

A fight broke out and spilled over into the parking lot at the Brandt Road Shell station. The people working at the gas station pressed their panic alarm. To be fair, most people would have done the same thing.

The panic call brought the police. They arrested the rowdy guy, but not for the fight—he was already wanted for other warrants.

The second incident involved a 26-year-old woman who was reported for being really drunk outside the fairgrounds. She was waving and screaming at people passing by.

RCMP waited with her until someone could come to pick her up. (Thank you, RCMP, for doing the right thing!)

The third event is where the bear spray comes in.

At 10:20 at night, an 18-year-old was wandering around the fairgrounds, trying to fight people. Someone called the police on him, but before the cops could get there, somebody bear sprayed the kid in the face.

The teenager wouldn’t tell the cops who sprayed him. And he wouldn’t explain why he wanted to fight strangers.

And really, we don’t blame him. We wouldn’t want to admit to getting owned that bad, either.
