VanIsle.News published from 2021 to 2023. What remains at this address is a preserved archive of that reporting. It is a set of static files — there are no accounts, no logins, no comment threads, no contact forms, no newsletter and no advertising.

That makes this short.

What is collected

Analytics. The archive uses two analytics tools, run independently of each other.

Google Analytics 4 (property G-S5G7F1ZTKP) counts how many people read it and which stories they reach. It records the pages you view, roughly where in the world you are, and what kind of browser and device you use. It sets cookies in your browser, named _ga and _ga_S5G7F1ZTKP, so that repeat visits are not counted as new people. Google Analytics 4 does not retain full IP addresses.

Cloudflare Web Analytics runs alongside it, loaded automatically because the site is served through Cloudflare. It independently records the pages you view, the page you arrived from, your approximate location, and your browser and device — the same shape of data as Google Analytics 4, gathered a second time by a second company. Unlike Google Analytics 4, it does not use cookies and does not track you across separate visits.

Server and network data. Beyond analytics, Cloudflare also handles the site’s delivery and blocks automated abuse. In doing so it processes ordinary request information such as your IP address and browser type, and may set its own cookies for bot detection. This happens for any site behind Cloudflare and is not specific to this archive.

What is not collected

There is nothing here that can take your data. No form, no sign-up, no account, no payment, no comment box. Nothing you submit is stored, because there is nothing to submit. No advertising networks run on this site, and nothing collected here is sold or shared beyond the services named above.

Embedded video and social posts

Some archived articles embed video or social posts from YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook. Those load from the third party’s own servers when you open the article, and they may set their own cookies. That content is governed by the policies of the company hosting it, not by this one. If you do not open an article containing an embed, nothing is requested from those services.

Turning analytics off

Analytics is easy to refuse and nothing on the archive breaks without it. Because the two tools work differently, no single setting stops both:

  • Most content blockers (uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, and similar) block both Google Analytics and Cloudflare Web Analytics by default — this is the one step that covers both.
  • Blocking cookies for this site, or using private browsing, stops Google Analytics. Cloudflare Web Analytics does not use cookies, so this step has no effect on it.
  • Installing Google’s official opt-out add-on disables Google Analytics across every site you visit. It has no effect on Cloudflare Web Analytics.

Archived articles link out to sources across the web, and to images once hosted elsewhere. Those links reflect the web as it was between 2021 and 2023, and many now lead to pages that have changed or disappeared. This statement covers only vanisle.news.

Changes

The archive is closed, so this page is expected to change rarely. If what is collected ever changes, this page changes with it.
