Ladysmith Showcases Award-Winning Island Artists

See 80 artists from all areas of VanIsle, and the Gulf Islands

There’s still time to vote for art show’s peoples’ choice award

If you want to take in some local arts and culture, look no further than Ladysmith’s École Davis Road.

That’s where the Ladysmith and District Arts Council is holding its 10th Fine Arts Show.

Almost 100 interested artists submitted more than 160 pieces to the juried show. Of these, jurors chose 125 to be included in the exhibit.

Over 80 artists from all areas of VanIsle and the Gulf Islands are represented. More than 150 people attended the show’s opening on Feb. 2.

Five awards of excellence were presented to Denise Tierney, Stephen Cole, Claudia Lohmann, Donna Hall, and Yvonne Vander Kooi.

There were also three jurors’ choice awards: Brenda Hughes, Dave Casey, and Sally Mann. Five other artists received honourable mentions.

The show is not the only thing going on for the Arts Council.

President Kathy Holmes announced at the opening that the gallery will be moving this summer. They will soon call home the newly remodelled Temperance Hotel on the corner of High Street and First Avenue in downtown Ladysmith.

“Having a spot right in the middle of downtown is huge for the arts in Ladysmith as well as for the vitality of our downtown,” Holmes said.

The art show is open Monday to Saturday, from 11 am to 4 pm, and runs until Feb. 25 at the school.

You can also view the show online. You can even support local creators — the artwork is available for purchase.

You’re invited to vote for the people’s choice award, which will be announced on Feb. 27.

Upcoming Arts Council events include their student art show, the Arts on the Avenue Festival, the spring art tour, and much more.
