TELUS is bringing more high-speed internet to the North Island, but we’re not quite sure when.

TELUS will be connecting more houses and businesses to its fibre optic network in Port Hardy and Port McNeill. Fibre optic was first introduced in the region in 2017. Faster internet really helped some folks get through the pandemic.

Port McNeill Mayor Gaby Wickstrom is looking forward to the upgrade.

“High-speed fibre optic internet has been a game-changer for Port McNeill,” she told the Campbell River Mirror. “We can now attract a variety of home-based entrepreneurs, and businesses in the region offering data-based services have increased their competitive capabilities because of the investment TELUS has made.”

TELUS will also be installing 5G in Campbell River, Port Hardy, and Port McNeil. The new service will mean you can get super-fast data on your phone, even in places where you haven’t been able to get any data service.

According to TELUS, they will have “connected 187 communities as well as 119 First Nations communities and 335 Indigenous lands across the province to 5G by the end of this year.”
