Celtic Culture is kicking off in full force at the Highland Games, taking place next week in Topaz Park in Victoria.
A full array of entertainment will be featured, and both athletes and performers are raring to go.
“Some of it is a spectacle. Where else do you get to see people throw trees?” said competitor Alex McAra to North Island Gazette.
In heavy lifting events, athletes throw around everything from hammers to weights, stones, bars and “cabers”(trees).
Apparently, highlanders really love slinging tools around in kilts.
But this is far from the only spectacle viewers will behold.
Scottish/Celtic Culture is full of niche dances, music, military tactics, and history – which will all be demonstrated in different performances and displays during the weekend.
On Saturday evening, viewers will be swept away by a night of music from the Victoria Military Music Festival Society.
The highlight is the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band, USMC, from San Diego.
Royal Canadian Navy Naden Band, Scottish regiment pipe bands, and professional drum majors will also perform.
Plus, while watching all this, you can savour some delicious traditional foods.
Vendors will provide all sorts of tasty treats and trinkets to delight your senses.
Elite athletes will compete on both days. This year Greater Victoria is represented by six men and six women – who will compete for equal prizes.
