Vanier Grads Clean Up on Scholarships

Prestigious scholarships will help 3 Comox valley grads pay for university

Scholarships for engineering, overcoming adversity, strength of character and community service awarded

Three Comox Valley high school grads have been awarded prestigious scholarships that will give them each a big boost to their future schooling.

Georges P. Vanier Secondary graduate Theo Lemay has earned a $100,000 Schulich Leadership Scholarship to study engineering at Queen University this fall. Lemay is being recognized for his outstanding academic achievement – and is the first Vanier student and one of just 100 students in Canada – to win the award this year. The Schulich Foundation supports STEM majors, or students focusing their studies on science, technology, engineering and math.

Fellow Vanier student Danielle Egilson earned a $40,000 post-secondary scholarship from the Cmolik Foundation, awarded to students who have overcome adversity to excel in their studies. Egilson plans to pursue studies in physics and astronomy.

“It means so much to me and gives me the opportunity to focus on furthering my education and finding new ways to challenge myself,” she said in a recent Comox Valley Record story.

The Cmolik Foundation was founded in 2008 on the belief that education can transform and empower. It provides opportunities for youth who have experienced adversity in their lives. There are currently 100 BC students enrolled in the Cmolik scholarship program.

Another Grade 12 Vanier student Tristan Rendell was among only 72 students selected from over 6,000 applications interviewed for a 2021 Loran Scholarship. He received a $5,000 award for use at any Canadian public university.

The Loran Scholars Foundation supports promising young Canadians who show the strength of character and a commitment to serve in their communities.
