WATCH: Rare North Pacific Right Whale Sighting

Incredible creatures filmed off the coast

North Pacific Right Whales were nearly extinct from over-hunting, but occasionally they are seen off northern Vancouver Island

Jared Towers and James Pilkington of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) followed a hunch in mid-June. It paid off.

They got to spend hours with a North Pacific right whale off in Queen Charlotte Sound between Haida Gwaii and northern Vancouver Island.

It’s only the fourth North Pacific Right Whale seen since the 1950s!
