Time to get tied up with this group

Building creative community in the Valley

In the summer, we connect over BBQs and beaches. But with winter now in full swing, it’s time to fill some more cozy, creative spaces.

Enter, Coastal Flow Creative.

Set in a century-old fabric-filled heritage home, it’s the perfect winter meet-up spot.

“There’s something about getting together with people and getting out of your head and into your hands,” said owner Michelle Frost to Alberni Valley News. “And creativity’s a great way to bring that together.”

The space is all about fibre crafts—needle felting, wet felting, punch needle, rug hooking, weaving, spinning, knitting and crochet, you name it.

Warm your heart up while you’re there, and leave with something to keep you warm out in the rest of the world.

“This is our purely creative, absolutely indulgent space,” Frost said of her shop, which includes a retail portion in front and a spacious group workshop in the back.

She’s just started a new drop-in initiative to get people working together this winter, and it’s anything but another knitting group.

“I’m emphatic that there’s more than just knitting,” she said jokingly.

She’s inviting people to come in for “Fibre Thursdays” and connect with all kinds of other makers.

She remarked that changes through the pandemic have greatly impacted the way we interact with each other, and she hopes the space can help change that.

“We have this perception that we are part of a community, but we’re starting to lose the ability to interact and converse and listen and tell stories,” she said.

“You can’t underestimate the power of people connecting.”

Fibre Thursdays drop-in will happen every Thursday from 1–4 p.m.

The Coastal Flow Studio is located at 4632 Elizabeth St. near Johnston Road in Port Alberni. Feel free to call 250-412-3738 if you have any questions.

Happy creating!
